Museum and Library Excursion

Stage 2 recently boarded a bus and headed into town to visit the Newcastle Museum and the Newcastle Regional Library. The Newcastle Museum opened this year and it’s a great place full of interesting and exciting activities. Stage 2 really enjoyed the interactive Supernova exhibition, the BHP display and the old fashioned tram display.
We also thought the old Model-T Ford was very interesting and we couldn’t believe it was so old!
After we finished at the museum we headed to the Newcastle Regional Library to investigate the Jeannie Baker exhibition. Jeannie Baker is a renowned author and artist and she creates intricate collages for her books.
We loved looking at the artworks and noticed a lot of ‘found’ materials were used to create them. We were lucky enough to complete our own collage on the day and thought this was a great activity.
Mrs Hannah and Ms O’Donnell said our behaviour was perfect on the excursion and they love taking Stage 2 out for the day.

Respect, Responsibilty & Safety

At Wallsend Public School we always learn about behaviour expectations that involve respect, responsibility and safety. Mrs Hannah found this video about responsibility and thought it explained the expectations in a fun way.

More Amazing Poetry!

Students from 3/4H recently entered the Hunter Bush Poets Rhyming Verse Competition. We worked on our poems over two weeks in literacy groups and helped each other when we became stuck for rhyming verses and words. We had a lot of laughs when we were writing our poems and were really proud of our finished products.
Mr Brown from the Bush Poets attended our Friday assembly to perform and present our prizes and certificates.
Chloe came 1st in the Year 4 division and won $40, Anika came 2nd in the Year 3 division and won $20 and Tenikka came 3rd in the Year 4 division and won $10.
Blake and Jai were both Highly Commended and received a certificate and Casey was commended and also received a certificate.

What a great effort! Well done everyone!

Waste Busters Video Conference

This week we participated in another video conference. This video conference was about recycling and minimising our waste. We met with four other schools across NSW and discussed the actions we could take to be more environmentally friendly. We also took turns sorting waste, completed a quiz and listened to the other schools ask some clever questions.
We enjoy video conferences because they link us to other students and we can share our ideas.

Compost Champions

Each day in 3/4H we collect our scraps from fruit break and put them into our green compost bin. Georgie and Casey have the responsibility of taking the scraps out to the school compost bins. The gardening group use the luscious compost on our lovely vegetable garden and it is a great way to reduce our wastage.
Georgie and Casey are very good at this job. They are efficient, remember to do the job every day and keep our tub nice and clean. Well done girls!

2000 Hits Celebration!

The 3/4H Wallsend Wonders blog has received over 2000 visitors from all over the globe. Mrs Hannah’s goal for the blog this year was to get 2000 hits by the end of the year and we have exceeded that already!
We had a little celebration in class today and we ate 2000 lollies! Yes, that’s right 2000 lollies!
First we had to estimate whether the big bag of jelly beans contained 2000 lollies. Mrs Hannah wasn’t so sure and thought she may have to buy some more.
We started to take turns counting out one hundred lollies and found the best way to do this was to make ten piles of ten lollies. If we tried to count one hundred lollies without using division we found we lost count and had to start again.
We found that our big bag easily reached our 2000 target, so it was eating time!
We had to do one more mathematical exercise before we could eat our lollies. We had to work out exactly how many lollies each person would receive and we discussed the best way to work it out.
We decided to divide 2000 by twenty five students and found that each child would get 80 lollies. Some people saved their lollies for later, some people traded colours and others swapped the mini lollies for more jelly beans. It was a great activity!

Our Clever Poets

Earlier in the year, 3/4H wrote some rhyming poems to enter in the Hunter/Central Coast PSP School Writing Competition. We worked really hard on our poems and enjoyed trying to think of lots of rhyming words, When we got stuck we looked at a website called Rhymezone which helped us find some great rhyming words.
This week, we found out that our poems had been really successful in the competition. Anthea, Chloe and Georgia.M all received certificates of merit and participation and Casey actually won the poetry division of the competition! Casey was presented with her certificate and a stationery set at our Friday assembly.
This was a wonderful achievement and shows what great little writers we have in 3/4H!
Well done girls!

Here is Casey’s great poem:-

Cheesy Spy was a daring mouse,
Who loved to live in her white house.
She scurried and dashed here and there,
Of disaster and danger she was aware.

Cheesy Spy saw a terminating trap,
She knew she faced a nasty snap.
The trap was like a man eating spider,
But curiosity bubbled inside her.

The cheese smelt succulent like a sizzling lamb chop,
She wanted a taste but feared the POP!
She decided to hatch an unbelievable plan,
And carefully thought, “I’ll do what I can.”

The plan was set and ready to ramble,
She was ready to hurry and scramble.
Her suit was black and rather small,
She hoped it would not make her fall.

Suddenly she had a deadly scare…
Her harness snapped! (but she had a spare!)

This poem is nearly at the end,
Do you want to know what happened to our furry friend?

SNAP! BANG! The trap slammed shut,
And made a giant dent in her little butt.
She was gone, the trap had won,
Her mousy life was now done.

Shake a Leg Program

Every Tuesday, Kristy from the Shake a Leg Program visits 3/4H. The Shake a Leg program focuses on Indigenous health issues and provides education on these issues to all Stage 2 children. Today we learnt about oral care and how to maintain healthy teeth. We talked about healthy food choices and the best way to clean our teeth when we couldn’t access a toothbrush. We are looking forward to learning lots more from Kristy this term.

Another Birthday Celebration

Today we had another birthday celebration in 3/4H as Dominic turned nine years old! We all enjoyed singing Happy Birthday to Dominic and shared a super birthday cake. His cake was shaped as a 9 and was topped with yummy blue icing, smarties and jelly beans. Happy Birthday to our friend Dom!

Charlotte Artworks

We have created some wonderful spider artworks that we are very proud of. We decided to do an artwork featuring a spider because we are reading ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and the main character, Charlotte, is a spider.
First we drew a web using white oil pastels on white paper and then we painted over the whole page with a blue water colour wash. The oil pastel resisted the wash and became highly visible.
Next, we traced around some circles to form the spider’s head and body and we painted these circles with a brush and black paint.
Finally we used a cardboard wedge dipped in black paint to create eight thin legs.
We love our ‘Charlottes’!
